Swiss Brand Value Rating Agency BV4 and HWZ University of Applied Sciences in Business Administration Zurich (HWZ) have analyzed the most successful social network brands in the world, of which eight are Chinese. Qualitative aspects of the brands were examined, and their monetary values determined. The most valuable social media brands are concentrated in the USA ($129 bn), China ($56 bn) and Europe ($ 14 bn). Together, the top 10 social-media brands have a total brand value of $145 bn.

As part of a photo project on the Chinese economy and global consumerism, French photographer Alain Delorme decided to zero in on the individual in his series Totems: specifically, Shanghai’s migrants, who bear the physical brunt of the fast-paced economy by hauling wares on their bikes and carts. Compared with consumers in other countries in the region, consumers in China are more concerned about the social and environmental impact of the things they buy and more likely to believe that social media has given them more power to effect change.
